“Man can never know the loneliness a woman knows. Man lies in the woman’s womb only to gather strength, he nourishes himself from this fusion, and then he rises and goes into the world, into his work, into battle, into art. He is not lonely. He is busy. The memory of the swim in amniotic fluid gives him energy, completion. Woman may be busy too, but she feels empty. Sensuality for her is not only a wave of pleasure in which she is bathed, and a charge of electric joy at contact with another. When man lies in her womb, she is fulfilled, each act of love a taking of man within her, an act of birth and rebirth, of child rearing and man bearing. Man lies in her womb and is reborn each time anew with a desire to act, to be. But for woman, the climax is not in the birth, but in the moment man rests inside of her.” ― Anaïs Nin, The Diary of Anaïs Nin, Vol. 1: 1931-1934
I came across this passage while researching some interesting female writers today. Anaïs Nin (1903-1977), was an American author born to Spanish-Cuban parents in France, where she was also raised. She lived most of her life in the U.S. where she became an established author.
I chose to post this because, for a while, I’ve been trying to articulate this notion that Anaïs has so clearly put into words for us. While her tone indicates some kind of sadness in the role that women play, I believe having the ability to contain others both physically and mentally is every woman’s asset; It is time for every girl to know just how precious and powerful she is, so that she uses her power wisely, and expects to be treated with such regard.
My heart swells with love. So much, at times, it hurts.
I try to learn how to gently share such a force bursting out of me like a surging river.
It changes lives, it overwhelms, it knows very well how to leave me thirsty and weak.
I crave for that water. I know it reaches far and deep
and then it seeps, into every hollow void, into every hiding crease.
I haven’t yet figured how to divert this river back to me.
This poem was given to me by a Native American woman at the end of a summer solstice sweat lodge. When we crawled out of the pitch dark, hot, muggy lodge, back into the fresh air of the world, it felt the way (I imagine) coming out of the womb would. Wombman.
2. Turn Envious Feelings Into Inspiration. Whenever you see something or someone you wish you could be more like (and you get that little pinch of envy) take that energy as a gift, because your heart is pointing out to you the very specific thing that you desire. You have the opportunity to include that in your wish list. And now add that to your “visual meditations”. These moments help you visualize your highest potential. Instead of thinking “Oh , why can’t I be more like that?” or “Why can’t I have that too” , think— “That’s what I’d like to be doing” or “I’d like to be more like that”. We are all mirrors for one another, helping each other realize our selves. Lets grow from one another instead of comparing to a point of self degradation. Be inspired and inspire. I thank all the women I’ve ever seen playing on stage who made me want to go home and practice.
3. Believe. Every man-made creation on this planet was first conceived as an idea in someones head. A person has to believe something is possible, before it even is, in order to bring that idea into the physical reality. To do so, he or she has to convince others it’s possible in order to have their cooperation. Belief is the gasoline that feeds our engines. It is the wind that propels us forward. Have faith in your ideas, trust your instincts, and go forth. You know the saying: “The only people who never fail are those who never try.” -Ilka Chase. You’ve got one life to live. Learn to take some risks. You can take other people’s advice/mistakes into consideration, in order to stay balanced with their perspective, but don’t let it limit you.
4. Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone. STAY OPEN. Every time you step out of your house you allow something new to happen. Every time you are challenged by something new, you use new parts of your brain. You expand. And this keeps you open, limber, and young spirited. The key to staying vital, is by staying curious. Is by staying adaptable. “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” - Charles Darwin
The changes we are faced in our life challenge us to grow and keep evolving. As harsh as some changes might be, each one is an opportunity from the universe. Get used to it. Most of us are going to be living longer lives than our grandparents did, expect many changes along the way, and different life times within one life. Be ready for it. Stay open. Love the adventure in it. And if you ever reach a point of stagnant reality, challenge yourself to learn something new; read a book or take a crash course in something you’ve always wanted to learn, find a physical activity you can enjoy, go out with a new group of people just to see what happens. That’s when new doors open, new opportunities arrive and the life you’ve envisioned bumps into you.
5. The Work Is Your Leisure. The four steps before this one are important. But this fifth crucial step seals the deal. Make sure you do at least one thing a day that advances your initial vision further. One thing a day if you’re really busy. Over time you will find yourself doing more. I don’t like to call it work because it is a pleasure to make your dreams come true. If you are passionate about what you want, be excited that you are taking a step towards your dream. Even if it is one little tiny step- know that you are moving Forward. And let that make you happy in that moment. Don’t work hard. Work Smart. Everyday a little. But EVERYDAY. “Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out…”— Robert J. Collier
*Most importantly, trust your feelings.
“Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.” - Buddha

I am living in a house in Silverlake with talented artists. The sun shines here everyday. This is the beauty I hear in the living room when they practice. Song Preservation Society.
You’re looking at a still image. This is the most movement I’ve ever come across in an optical illusion. Makes me wonder about how much our brains can really process the world in front of us. How much is not visible to our eyes…
“Love manifests beauty, contentment.
Contentment expresses tenderness,
tenderness begets humility,
humility creates compassion,
and compassion creates
Pure quality,
Love,
Love manifests
Beauty”

Oh New York whenever I’m down, whenever in doubt, I leave my house and you find me. On a rainy evening the sidewalk’s washed clean, and the streets glare wet as taxis tap lightly. I’m walking home now, comforted by a glass of wine I shared with a friend of mine. We sat at the spotted pig in the west village. After an art demonstration all the way uptown on park avenue. After a reading by my favorite poet in the east village. After a play at the Citizens Brigade in Chelsea. After the cello player sang and played at the Bedford L station. After a stroll through my favorite book store owned by a man with a beard and a shirt stained with coffee. After my neighbor asked me a favor and I helped him. After my super knocked on my door and told me to ignore the noise from the floor above me. After I started my day just moments away, and the time flew by without me knowing. Good night my life, my love, my heart’s satisfied, and gratitude becomes me.
California sun,
Rays of yours are nourishing
I hear your breeze’s whistle
Swishing softly through the leaves
Specks of light and shadow
Flicker, shine, and hypnotize Flashing through the branches
Dancing fondling loosening l i n e s …
My lids they hover soft above eyes
in hale a warm ball of light
It’s tenderness
Bliss
Sun love sooth calm
Me my tingle float
Jaw loose let low
Breath soft shallow go
Sleep deep love, woman
Be kind Settle near
night calms quiet here
night comes quiet here
Jotting down the lyrics to ‘The Future Believe’ in preparation for the next music video I’m shooting. Who wants to be in it?
All Things Must Pass is a crucial record to have. It is like the sun; every song will warm your bones and fill you with tender love. It can’t be explained just listen to it in your car while you’re driving, in full volume, or in your headphones while you’re walking… Keep it moving. Thank you George.
There are friends who arrive to share fun experiences with you. Some who arrive to remind you of who you are when you’re wrecked and faced down to the ground. Some who will call you out on your bullshit and tell you you’ve got shit in your teeth. And those who, by simply existing, teach you countless lessons about yourself. Once in a lifetime comes a friend who is all that and more. With you time is an exhilarating rush through a vortex…Learning, living, and breathing the Art of Life… all the way up.
Thank you for being you, Dear Udi. Carpe Diem.
This is Mike Brant. He was from the town of Haifa in Israel, the son of holocaust survivors, his real name was Moshe Brand. He only spoke Hebrew, but sang phonetically in French. In 1970 he became a huge star in France for this song Laisse moi t’aimer, which was just one of his amorous ballads I remember my parents slow dancing to.
In 1975, he died after throwing himself from the window of his hotel in Paris. His voice was and is legendary. He could be coined as the jewish Elvis. And possibly the most handsome man in the world.
